General Likes: Tropey shenanigans, taken as seriously or as silly as you like. Protectiveness. Loyalty. Conflict. Hurt/comfort. Messy, complicated relationships where no one person is necessarily "better" than the other. Characters who are normally in control very much not being that. Canon divergence/for want of a nail AUs. Role swaps. Dragons and/or robots. Hair ruffling. If romance is involved, I have a very strong preference for F/F or M/M interpretations.

General DNWs: Major character death. Torture or mutilation. Issue fic. Mundane AUs. PWP. Non-con. Blood play. Age play. Underage.

Gold - Ria Mae (Music Video)

General Thoughts:

I liked Ria Mae's music the first time I heard it (Clothes Off being the single in question) and could not be happier with how much airtime she's taking up on Canadian radio in general, but Gold was the song that really made me fall in love with her. It's such a bop! And the lyrics are such an evocative depiction of this relationship that's falling apart. And then, of course, I saw the video and...if we're talking music videos that I wish were a full television series, this is it. The premise could not play to my interests any harder if it tried.

Specific Prompts:

  • Something post-canon from either character's perspective. People realizing that they can't bury feelings so easily after things have gone sideways is my jam. How conflicted does the cop feel after closing the case? Does she make any jail visits to talk to her ex-girlfriend? How does said ex-girlfriend feel about the betrayal?
  • Maybe said criminal ex-girlfriend breaks out of jail and old feelings are brought to the surface in a desperate game of cat and mouse.
  • I love that the lyrics to this song can easily be interpreted as fitting either character's POV. Anything jumping off the sense of slow decline, loss, and realization that they portray is cool.
  • How did the relationship start? What was the game plan for the cop? Why did the criminal decide to let someone get so close? At what point did either of them catch feels and realize they were in too deep? How genuine were the cop's feelings at any point?

My Blood - Ellie Goulding (Song)

General Thoughts:

When Halcyon dropped, My Blood quickly became my favourite song on the album by a mile. I love the evocative imagery of the lyrics, I love the beat, I love the melody, I love the "oooh, oooh, oooohs", I love the ethereal chiming parts, I love the focus on death and rebirth. I just think it's fantastic. Anything inspired by the song's lyrics or sound is going to go over pretty well with me.

I really like the sense of healing that the song evokes - acknowledging and purging all the things that have done the narrator harm and then, even though it's hard, pushing forward.

Feel free to take the lyrics as metaphorically or as literally as you like. I'm definitely open to a very literal, fantasy-esque interpretation here as I feel the whole song's vibe works really well for that.

Particularly Neat Lyrics:
  • And I'm caught in the crossfire of my own thoughts
The color of my blood is all I see on the rocks
  • And God knows, I'm not dying but I bleed now
And God knows, it's the only way to heal now
  • Alarms will ring for eternity
The waves will break every chain on me

Venus Fly - Grimes ft. Janelle Monae (Music Video)

General Thoughts:

The imagery in this video is so wild and I'm so down for anything branching off of literally any of it, but especially the more fantasy-esque aspects. In terms of the song itself, I'm crazy about that drum beat and the way that the rhythm feeds into the vibe of the imagery. I am also very much into the aggressive/confrontational feel of the song in general. Femslash is optional, but encouraged.

Specific Prompts:

  • The fashion in this video is so wild and I'd love to learn about the world it exists in. Please tell me that literally all of these outfits are common place and that's just the way this world is.
  • Janelle and Grimes's characters with the flaming swords - I want to know everything about them. I want to read all of their adventures where they fight back to back. What are they fighting? Do swords generally flame in this world or is it something specific to the context of this scene? They're dressed very differently - are they from the same place or did they just become allied for this battle for some reason?
  • Do all the scenes in the video take place in the same universe? Are all versions of Janelle and Grimes the same characters? If they're not in the same the universe, are the characters aware of each other?
  • I also really like little moments like Grimes popping the bubble and setting the air around her hand on fire and the orange light/possibly more fire? on the violin. It definitely adds a sense of magic to the world of the video.

Know Your Name - Mary Lambert (Music Video)

General Thoughts:

What a cute, fun song with a cute, fun video. I loved this song the instant I heard it - it's so upbeat and endearingly earnest and explicitly gay. There are so many little lyrical moments I love, but the bridge is especially precious. And then the video was so charming with its comic book vibe and worldbuilding where arcade games are serious business.

Specific Prompts:
  • Game Over and Solitaire proceed to enjoy a very shounen sports anime-esque rivalmance, facing off at various venues and smooching in between games.
  • How did Game Over's gang meet? Were they all always into arcade games? How did they become a roving pack of Pac-Man playing badasses? Have they ever perpetrated a heist? Are any of them actual princesses and/or superheros? Where did they get those lightsabers?

Take Me to Church/Crazy In Love - Chris Brenner & Johannes Weber (Song)

General Thoughts:

I really adore this mash-up. The original Crazy in Love has always been one of those songs 100% guaranteed to get me bopping when it comes over the radio, but slowed down and mixed with Take Me to Church like this, the cover really gives the lyrics this irresistible sense of desperate devotion. This is such a great "love is messing me up" song.

Specific Prompts:
  • Given that this song is a duet, are the lyrics from the perspective of a single character or two? Is this one person "crazy in love" to the point of begging for salvation from their lover in the Take Me to Church components? Or is it two people who are that level of hung up on each other?
  • What are the circumstances in these characters' lives pushing them to this level of desperation and devotion? Do the Take Me to Church components implicate an outside force pushing them? Or is it something internal?
